Synopsis in English
Shown here are excerpts of a photo collection comparing illuminated window christmas decorations in Leipzig, Berlin and the Erzgebirge (literally, Ore Mountains) a small region, in the East of Germany adjacent to the Czech Republic. The Erzgebirge became a point of mirgation from the West in the 12th century when the mining industry began to to establish itself. Mining and christianity have contributed to the various traditions and rites, of which many are still celebrated today. Over time the industry turned towards wood processing as well as artisanal decoration making, examples are nutcrackers, christmas pyramids and other typical figures of the region. Every object in these windows has a story. They are part consumer history, part creative activity and part ‘Volkskunde’, an outdated German word for cultural studies, or folklore.

Some decorations are from the Baumarkt, the home improvement store, next door, some are obviously old pieces that pre-date industrialisation, some implicitly tell of the Deutsche Teilung, the German political division. If I spot those objects in windows in Berlin, they probably reveal a personal connection, perhaps family in the region. Some decorations actually have disturbing political backgrounds. The geometry and design of the windows varies in occurrence across cities, villages, districts and even neighbourhoods.

The windows are decorated for the public, like a stage. Some windows hold surprises when you zoom in. The distinction between diorama and shrine is at times not an easy one to make. It is a specific sort of display that invites examination and almost contemplation. It reveals a sense of aesthetics, identity and creativity of the owner.

As far as I am aware this project is the first attempt at an aesthetic classification of these windows. At the same time, it is a bit of a violation of privacy to point the camera into a stranger’s apartment. All people that I could personally ask agreed to have the picture of their window taken. In a future exhibition, every window in every photo will be accompanied by an inventory of its content.

Gezeigt sind Ausschnitte einer vergleichenden Fotosammlung von beleuchteten Weihnachtsfensterdekorationen in Leipzig, Berlin und dem Erzgebirge. Das Erzgebirge wurde im 12. Jahrhundert zu einem Ort der Einwanderung aus dem Westen Deutschlands, als die Bergbaunindustrie begann, sich zu entwickeln. Bergbau und Christemtum haben zu den varientenreichen Traditionen beigetragen, von denen viele heute noch begangen werden. Mit der Zeit wandte sich die örtliche Industrie der Holzverarbeitung zu, sowie der Erfindung und Herstellung von Holzkunst. Beispiele sind Nussknacker, Weihnachtspyramiden, Räuchermännchen und andere typische Figuren der Region. Jedes Objekt in diesen Fenstern hat eine Geschichte. Sie stellen teils Konsumgeschichte, teils kreative Beschäftigung und teils‘Volkskunde’ dar.

Manche dieser Dekorationen kommen aus dem Baumarkt nebenan, andere sind offensichtlich alte Stücke aus der vorindustriellen Zeit, manche erzählen implizit von der Deutschen Teilung. Wenn ich diese Objekte in Fenstern in Berlin entdecke, enthüllen sie vermutlich eine persönlichen Verbindung, vielleicht haben die Besitzer Verwandtschaft in der Region. Manche Dekorationen haben tatsächlich verstörende politische Hintergründe. Die typologische Geometrie und Gestaltung der Fenster variiert in Städten, Dörfern, Bezirken und sogar innerhalb von Nachbarschaften.

Die Fenster sind für die Öffentlichkeit dekoriert, wie eine Bühne. Manche Fenster enthalten Überraschugen, wenn man hineinzoomt. Die Unterscheidung zwischen Diorama und Schrein ist manchmal nicht einfach zu treffen. Es handelt sich um eine bestimmte Art des Zeigens, die zu Untersuchung und beinahe Kontemplation auffordert. Es wird sichtbar eine Ästhetik, Identität und Kreativität der Besitzer der Fenster.

Soweit ich weiss, ist dieses Projekt das erste seiner Art, das einen Versuch unternimmt, diese Fenster ästhetisch zu klassifizieren. Gleichzeitig ist es auch ein wenig Verletzung der Privatsphäre, die Kamera in die Wohnungen von Fremden zu richten. All jene, die ich persönlich gefragt habe stimmten zu, dass ich ein Bild von ihren Fenstern mache. Jedes Fenster in jedem Foto wird bei einer künftigen Ausstellung des Projektes von einem Inventar seiner Inhalte begleitet werden.
