Magic City

Exposition
From everyday objects and food from various cultures from my household I build cityscapes. These are representative and fantastic buildings created in my living space. Some of them I based on the Armenian architecture of sacred buildings, which have been built in the same way for thousands of years with recurring design elements, combined with modern architecture.

Intentionally I use elements from my own biography. The Magic Cities are a technique to create a self-portrait of a person, and to show their respective individual variety of backgrounds. I want to honor and emphasize that culture emerges from the exchange and blending of influences, and nationalistic claims lead away from the purpose of culture, which I define as self-actualization.

The title is based on the novel “The Magic City” , 1910, by the English author Edith Nesbit, in whose books children experience adventures by means of magic and spells, and by whose stories I was significantly influenced as a child.

Erklärung
Aus Alltagsgegenständen und Lebensmitteln aus diversen Kulturkreisen aus meinem Haushalt baue ich Stadtlandschaften. Es entstehen repräsentative und fantastische Gebäude in meinem Wohnraum. Manche von ihnen habe ich an die Armenischen sakralen Gebäude angelehnt, welche seit Tausenden mit wiederkehrenden Gestaltungselementen gebaut, und dabei mit moderner Architektur kombiniert werden.

Absichtlich verwende ich Elemente aus meiner eigenen Biographie. Die Magic Cities sind eine Technik, um ein Selbstporträt einer Person zu kreieren, und ihre jeweilig individuelle Vielfalt an Hintergründen zu zeigen. Ich möchte würdigen und betonen, dass Kultur aus dem Austausch und der Vermengung von Einflüssen hervorgeht und nationalistische Ansprüche wegführen vom Zweck der Kultur, den ich als Selbstaktualisierung definiere.

Der Titel basiert auf dem Roman „The Magic City“ , 1910, der englischen Autorin Edith Nesbit, in deren Büchern Kinder mittels Magie und Zauber Abenteuer erleben, und von deren Geschichten ich als Kind maßgeblich beeinflusst worden bin.

.Because of Corona restrictions, the work was moved by the Galerie Bernau in the framework of the exhibition Heimat, Herz, Orte, curated by Frederiek Weda, in March 2021 into public space. Four motifs of the photo series are shown from 20 March to 20 April 2021 in three parts at the train station Bernau, track 5, on a large scale billboard.
