Proposal for an Film and Video Theatre and Museum. It does not house and exhibit a collection but rather is a completely new institution to advance video and film art.
I have been often unhappy with the lax presentation of film, digital work and video in museums and galleries. No sound insulation, bad image quality, nor enough seats etc etc. The solution is not just to show art films solely in the theater and be done with it. There has to be created an infinitely adjustable environment, designed by invested architects and artists, for the moving images in the contemporary art world. Things are not looking like Dan Graham's Cinema (1981) will be built anytime soon. KuKi can be a stage for this kind of ambitious project. A mix of private investors and public funding from sources in Film, Visual Art, Digital Industries, and Architecture will ensure that KuKi can create new dynamics of artists working together. Existing initiatives around the world will find in KuKi a platform and stable structure that provides security and visibility for movements that center around moving images.
Each year, the programme for KuKi will incorporate 3 major exhibitions with new interior architecture each, and inbetween 3 smaller exhibitions that make use of new interior architecture and collaborations
KuKi's content is going to be provided by the 3x3 programme: - every four months, KuKi initiates an Open Call for emerging artists for video, film and digital works and installation ideas
in a corresponding interval, every four months a Closed Call is initiated for established and famous artists for video, film and digital works and installation/architectural ideas
there have to be matching programs inititated for established and emerging artists and existing artworks
